Watkinson - 2006 - Journal of Applied Ecology 43 (4):617-627.
1 Evidence-based policy requires researchers to provide the answers to ecological questions that are of interest to policy makers. To find out what those questions are in the UK, representatives from 28 organizations involved in policy, together with scientists from 10 academic institutions, were asked to generate a list of questions from their organizations. 2 During a 2-day workshop the initial list of 1003 questions generated from consulting at least 654 policy makers and academics was used as a basis for (...)

    Nishi Amane and modern Japanese thought.Thomas R. H. Havens - 1970 - Princeton, N.J.,: Princeton University Press.
A nineteenth-century aristocrat, Nishi Amane (1829-1897) was one of the first Japanese to assert the supremacy of Western culture. He was sent by his government to Leiden to study the European social sciences; on his return to Japan shortly before the climactic Meiji Restoration of 1868 he introduced and adapted European utilitarianism and positivism to his country's intellectual world. To modernize, Nishi held, Japan must cast off the bonds of the Confucian world-view in order to adopt new principles of empirical (...)

    The inescapability of moral reasons.R. H. Myers - 1999 - Philosophy and Phenomenological Research 59 (2):281-307.
According to Thomas Nagel, morality's authority is determined by the extent to which its way of balancing agent-neutral and agent-relative values resembles reason's. He himself would like to think that the resemblance is close enough to ensure that it will always be reasonable to act as morality demands. But his attempts to establish this never really get off the ground, in large part because he never makes it very clear how these two perspectives on value are to be characterized. (...)

    Die Ästhetik des Thomas von Aquin. [REVIEW]H. K. R. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 16 (3):582-583.
In an introductory sketch of history of scholastic interest in aesthetics, the author notes the reawakening of Thomistic interest in this subject since the last century. He adds, with evidence drawn from nineteenth and twentieth century works, that this interest has been accompanied by methodological confusions and a misunderstanding of the theory of beauty of St. Thomas himself. He seeks to remedy this situation with a scholarly treatment of Aquinas' theory of beauty, divided into two parts; the first a (...)

Personal Metaphors as Motivational Resources: Boosting Anticipated Incentives and Feelings of Vitality Through a Personal Motto-Goal.Thomas H. Dyllick, Oliver Dickhäuser & Dagmar Stahlberg - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Motto-goals describe a desired mind-set and provide a person with a guiding principle of how to approach a personal goal or obligation. We propose that motto-goals can be conceptionalized as individually created metaphors and that the figurative, metaphorical language and the characteristics of the formation process make them effective in changing the perception of unpleasant personal obligations as more inherently enjoyable and raise vitality levels. To test whether a newly devised minimalistic motto-goal intervention can make goal striving more attractive and (...)

Issues of “Cost, Capabilities, and Scope” in Characterizing Adoptees' Lack of “Genetic-Relative Family Health History” as an Avoidable Health Disparity: Response to Open Peer Commentaries on “Does Lack of ‘Genetic-Relative Family Health History’ Represent a Potentially Avoidable Health Disparity for Adoptees?”.Thomas May, James P. Evans, Kimberly A. Strong, Kaija L. Zusevics, Arthur R. Derse, Jessica Jeruzal, Alison LaPean Kirschner, Michael H. Farrell & Harold D. Grotevant - 2016 - American Journal of Bioethics 16 (12):4-8.
Many adoptees face a number of challenges relating to separation from biological parents during the adoption process, including issues concerning identity, intimacy, attachment, and trust, as well as language and other cultural challenges. One common health challenge faced by adoptees involves lack of access to genetic-relative family health history. Lack of GRFHx represents a disadvantage due to a reduced capacity to identify diseases and recommend appropriate screening for conditions for which the adopted person may be at increased risk. In this (...)
